More about this program
Sometimes, you may experience intense energy and euphoria, known as mania . Other times, you might feel deep sadness and fatigue, often called depression or a major depressive episode . We also assist those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and anxiety . Our goal is to ensure every patient receives the appropriate, evidence-based treatment to improve their overall well-being and quality of life .
Bipolar disorder is a brain-based condition and is not anyone’s fault. It can be influenced by genetics , meaning it may run in families, as well as environmental factors. There are different types of bipolar disorder , each with unique characteristics. Bipolar I disorder involves severe mania or psychosis , where a person may experience hallucinations or delusions.
Bipolar II disorder differs slightly. Instead of full mania , individuals experience hypomania , which includes elevated energy and racing thoughts but is less intense and shorter in duration. Cyclothymia is a milder, longer-lasting form of mood changes that can still significantly impact daily functioning. Regardless of the type, bipolar disorder often causes insomnia (difficulty sleeping) and trouble focusing, which can affect work, relationships, and daily life.

What are the Types of Bipolar Disorder?
There are three recognized types of bipolar disorder. They are Bipolar I Disorder, Bipolar II Disorder, and Cyclothymic Disorder. Bipolar II Disorder is characterized by depressive and hypomanic episodes, which are less intense than those in Bipolar I Disorder.
This refers to the occurrence of one manic episode or several hypomanic episodes. Some persons might also experience depressive episodes. Individuals with Bipolar I may experience severe manic symptoms that significantly affect their mood and energy levels.
People with Bipolar II suffer from hypomanic episodes that last for at least 4 days. They will also have a prolonged major depressive episode. This might last for more than 2 weeks. Major depressive episodes in Bipolar II typically last around two weeks and can significantly impact daily functioning.
People with cyclothymia will have depressive and hypomania episodes. However, these episodes will be mild with a shorter duration than the other types of bipolar disorder. Cyclothymia involves alternating cycles of depressive and manic episodes, though they are milder and shorter in duration.
To learn more about the type of bipolar disorder you or your loved one might be facing, contact your doctor or health professional.
