More about this program
Alcohol abuse means drinking in a way that causes harm to your health, your relationships, or your daily life. The American Psychiatric Association defines AUD in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) as a pattern of alcohol use that causes major problems and distress.
Alcohol abuse is not about willpower. It is a real medical condition. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism reports that more than 28 million adults in the United States have AUD. It affects teenagers, young adults, parents, and older adults alike.

What Is Alcohol Abuse?
Alcohol abuse means drinking in a way that causes harm to your health, your relationships, or your daily life. Doctors and mental health experts use the term alcohol use disorder (AUD) to describe this condition.
Signs of Unhealthy Alcohol Use
You may have a problem with alcohol if you:
These are warning signs that it may be time to seek treatment. A health care provider or treatment specialist can help you understand where you stand.
Understanding Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD)
Alcohol use disorder, sometimes called alcoholism, is more common than most people think. It ranges from mild to severe. Even mild AUD can get worse over time if left untreated.
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), alcohol misuse is one of the leading causes of preventable illness and death in the United States. The Preventive Services Task Force recommends that all adults get screened for unhealthy alcohol use. A simple test called the Disorders Identification Test can help a doctor or counselor spot a problem early.
Who Is at Risk?
Anyone can develop AUD, but some people face a higher risk. Risk factors include:
Binge drinking means having four or more drinks in about two hours for women, or five or more for men. Heavy drinking means more than seven drinks per week for women or more than fourteen for men. Both patterns raise the risk of serious health problems and full AUD.
What Happens to Your Body During Alcohol Withdrawal?
When a person who drinks heavily tries to stop drinking, the body reacts. This is called alcohol withdrawal. Withdrawal symptoms can start within a few hours after the last drink. They can range from mild to life-threatening.
Common Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms
In serious cases, a person can have seizures or a dangerous condition called delirium tremens (DTs). This is why it is so important to not try to quit drinking alone. Working with a medical team can help you avoid withdrawal symptoms that are dangerous.
At OC Revive, we coordinate medical treatment and detox services to help keep you safe during this process. Our team monitors your health and can work with physicians to help you get through withdrawal in the safest way possible.
How Alcohol Abuse Affects Mental Health
Alcohol and mental health are closely linked. Many people who struggle with alcohol problems also deal with mental health disorders like depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder. This is called a co-occurring disorder or dual diagnosis.
Drinking alcohol may seem to help with stress or bad feelings in the short term, but it actually makes mental health issues worse over time. Excessive alcohol consumption changes the way the brain works and can make it harder to manage stress, sleep well, or feel good without alcohol.
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism has found strong links between alcohol use disorder and conditions like:
At OC Revive, we treat both the alcohol use disorder and any mental health condition at the same time. This is called dual diagnosis treatment, and it gives people a much better chance at long-term recovery.
Alcohol Abuse Treatment at OC Revive
Getting help for alcohol abuse treatment starts with a simple step — reaching out. At OC Revive, our team builds a personal treatment plan around your needs, your history, and your goals. No two people are the same, and no two treatment plans should be either.
We follow evidence-based treatment methods supported by randomized clinical trials and randomized controlled trials. These are approaches that science has shown actually work.
Levels of Care We Offer
Partial hospitalization is an intensive treatment option. You come to our facility for several hours each day but go home at night. This level of care works well for people who need a lot of support but do not need around-the-clock medical supervision. It is more structured than outpatient but less restrictive than inpatient treatment.
Our intensive outpatient program gives you strong support while letting you keep your daily life going. You attend therapy sessions multiple days per week. This is a great step-down from PHP or a strong starting point for many people.
We also offer evening intensive outpatient options for people who work or go to school during the day. Recovery should fit your life.
Standard outpatient care is a lighter level of support. It works well for people who have made strong progress and need continued check-ins and therapy as part of their relapse prevention plan.
