Program overview
IOP in plain language
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a type of treatment option offered at many rehab facilities for those struggling with substance abuse disorders and/or a dual diagnosis. It is designed to provide a high level of support and care while allowing individuals to continue living at home and participating in their daily responsibilities.
At a glance
Multiple sessions per week
Enough contact to change course—without living at a facility overnight.
Real-life practice nightly
Apply skills at home, then process wins and setbacks in the next block.
Dual diagnosis standard
Mood, trauma, and substance use treated together—not in separate silos.
Step up or down
Move to PHP if you need more structure, or OP as you stabilize.
More about this program
During IOP, individuals can expect to participate in various therapies and activities that are aimed at supporting their recovery process. This may include individual therapy, group therapy, and family therapy sessions. These sessions may utilize evidence-based approaches such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) to help individuals address negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to their substance abuse.
In addition to traditional talk therapies, many rehab facilities also offer alternative therapies as part of their IOP program. These include holistic approaches such as meditation, yoga, and breathwork. These practices can help individuals learn to manage stress and find inner peace, which can be particularly helpful in early recovery when emotions can be intense.
IOP treatment at OC Revive will also include education about substance abuse and recovery, as well as skills training to help individuals build a strong foundation for long-term sobriety. This will include topics such as relapse prevention, communication skills, and coping with cravings.

Why this level
Why people choose IOP
PHP sits between weekly outpatient and full hospitalization—more clinical hours when you need them, without living at a facility overnight.
- 01
More than weekly therapy
Intensity high enough to interrupt patterns that one hour a week cannot hold.
- 02
Life can keep moving
Work, school, and family remain possible—especially with Evening IOP options.
- 03
Peer + clinical support
Process groups and licensed clinicians in one structured week.
- 04
Insurance-navigable outpatient care
Admissions helps verify commercial benefits for intensive outpatient levels.
IOP may be right if…
- 01
You need more than weekly counseling
Use or symptoms are active enough that light outpatient care is not enough.
- 02
You do not need overnight medical care
You are appropriate for outpatient intensity and can return home safely at night.
- 03
Dual diagnosis is part of the picture
Substance use and mental health both need structured, integrated attention.
IOP may not be the first step when…
You need full-day structure
PHP may be safer when acuity is higher.
Medical detox or inpatient is required
Stabilize first, then step into outpatient IOP.
Crisis or emergency
Call 911 or go to the ER. Admissions can help with next steps after.
Therapies & modalities
What happens in IOP programming
Clinical and experiential work woven through the program day—skills you practice in session and take home each evening.
- 01
DBT & CBT
Evidence-based frameworks for emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and cognitive restructuring—practical skills you can use the same day, not only in session.
- Identify triggers and unhelpful thought patterns
- Build distress-tolerance tools for cravings and conflict
- Practice skills in group and individual settings
- 02
Art & music therapy
Creative modalities when talk therapy is not enough. Expressing through art and music can lower anxiety, surface trauma safely, and open processing that words block.
- Nonverbal expression for hard-to-name feelings
- Reduce anxiety through structured creative work
- Integrated with clinical goals—not free-time only
- 03
Yoga & meditation
Body-based regulation so recovery lives in the nervous system. Grounding, breath, and mindful movement help you stay present when stress spikes outside program hours.
- Breathwork and grounding for acute stress
- Gentle movement to reconnect body and mind
- Skills that travel home with you
- 04
Group & peer support
Process groups and peer connection so you practice recovery with people who understand. Isolation fuels use; community builds accountability and hope.
- Clinical process groups led by licensed staff
- Peer connection without judgment
- Practice social skills in a safe setting
- 05
Individual clinical work
One-to-one time with clinicians who track mood, substance use, and behavior on a plan built for you—not a one-size curriculum delivered on autopilot.
- Personalized treatment planning and check-ins
- Space for dual-diagnosis and trauma themes
- Clear goals between sessions
- 06
Life skills & accountability
Time management, communication, stress tools, and relapse prevention so hours outside program still support recovery—especially for dual-diagnosis needs.
- Relapse-prevention planning you can follow
- Structure that fits work, school, and family
- Skills for relationships and daily life
