What is Krokodil and What is it Made Of

Table of Contents

Welcome to OC Revive’s blog post, where we will delve into the dangerous world of Krokodil, a synthetic drug with devastating effects. Our aim is to raise awareness about this harmful substance and offer guidance for those seeking help or wanting to support their loved ones on the path to recovery.

Krokodil, also known as “the flesh-eating drug,” is a powerful and highly addictive opioid. Its name derives from the Russian word “krokodil,” meaning crocodile, due to the scale-like greenish appearance it causes on the skin of long-term users. This illicit drug has become a significant concern in the world of substance abuse.

What is Krokodil?

Definition of Krokodil

Krokodil is a homemade, cheap substitute for heroin, synthesized from codeine, a readily available over-the-counter medication. However, its production involves the use of various toxic and corrosive chemicals, making it extremely hazardous to both the body and mind.

Origin and History

Krokodil first emerged in Russia in the early 2000s and quickly spread to other parts of the world. It was initially seen as a desperate alternative for heroin users who couldn’t afford or access the expensive drug. The homemade nature of Krokodil’s production allowed for easy and widespread distribution.

Spread of Krokodil Abuse

Over time, the abuse of Krokodil has reached epidemic proportions in some regions, causing severe health issues and even death for those ensnared in its grip.

Composition of Krokodil

Desomorphine: The Active Ingredient

Krokodil’s primary active ingredient is desomorphine, a synthetic opioid known for its potency and fast-acting nature. While desomorphine itself is used in some medical scenarios, the homemade production process of Krokodil results in a substance that is impure and tainted with dangerous byproducts.

Manufacturing Process

The “cooking” process of Krokodil involves mixing codeine with easily accessible chemicals such as gasoline, paint thinner, hydrochloric acid, and red phosphorus. The resulting substance is injected into the bloodstream, leading to a rapid and intense high.

Dangerous Chemicals Used

The inclusion of toxic chemicals in Krokodil’s production causes extensive damage to the body, leading to the infamous gangrenous wounds and decay of the flesh.

The Devastating Effects of Krokodil

Short-term Effects

The short-term effects of Krokodil use are both intense and short-lived. Users experience an immediate euphoria and numbing sensation, followed by drowsiness and lethargy.

Long-term Consequences

Unfortunately, the long-term consequences of Krokodil abuse are dire. Continued use leads to severe health issues, organ damage, and a drastically reduced life expectancy.

Recognizing Krokodil Abuse

Physical Signs and Symptoms

Recognizing Krokodil abuse can be challenging, but there are some physical signs to watch for, such as skin discoloration, scaly patches, and the appearance of open sores and ulcers.

Behavioral Indicators

Krokodil addiction also has noticeable behavioral changes, including social withdrawal, neglect of personal responsibilities, and a preoccupation with obtaining and using the drug.

Dangers and Health Risks

Tissue Damage and Necrosis

One of the most horrifying effects of Krokodil is the severe tissue damage it causes at injection sites, leading to necrosis and rotting of the flesh.

Risk of Infections and Blood-borne Diseases

Krokodil users face a heightened risk of infections due to the unsterile environment in which the drug is produced and the use of shared needles.

Psychological Impact

Aside from physical harm, Krokodil abuse takes a severe toll on mental health, leading to depression, anxiety, and cognitive impairments.

Treatment Options for Krokodil Addiction

Seeking Professional Help

Overcoming Krokodil addiction requires professional assistance. Seeking help from addiction specialists is crucial for a safe and successful recovery journey.

Medical Detoxification

Medical detoxification helps manage withdrawal symptoms and ensures that the body is cleansed from the drug’s toxins.

Behavioral Therapy

Therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), equips individuals with coping mechanisms to address the root causes of addiction.

Stephen Carmel

Co-Founder & CFO

I began my journey to recovery back in 2011 when i moved to California from New York.Along with my recovery and beginning a new way of life, I began to develop a heart for others struggling with sobriety. My journey to California was filled with many trials and lessons learned, but most of all, personal growth. I truly believe I would not have found success if I didn’t come to California.

I first opened an adult treatment center, California Prime Recovery(CPR) as a way to work with those struggling on a daily basis. Over the last 3 years, CPR has evolved into someting much more impactful and beautiful than i could’ve ever imagined. I have come to realize that my own happiness and growth depends on being involved in the lives of others in recovery. Helping people through recovery is a cornerstone of many 12 step programs, and it has become the most important aspect of personal life. Giving back to those still suffering is the only way not to lose what you have gained.

Throughout this journey, and by mentoring many adolescents, I realized i wanted to offer more to teens who were struggling just as i was. This is when i decided to start OC Revive. I had built many wonderful relationships throughout my professional journey and found two others who shared the same vision, and passion that i had for the youth. It didn’t take long for myself, Tyler Michaelis, and Derek Walsh to turn our dream into a reality. We are committed to providing the best possible treatment for adolescents and truly believe “their future is our collective responsibility”.

Derek Walsh

Co-Founder & COO

As Co-Founder & COO of OC Revive, Derek has a wealth of personal and professional experience dealing with the issues faced by today’s troubled teen. Throughout High School and College, Derek struggled with peer pressure, learning challenges, and substance abuse. Working with the support of family and friends, Derek set out to conquer those obstacles and find a richer, more fulfilling life.

On 15 October 2012, Derek overcame his own substance abuse problem and dedicated himself to help others work through their own addiction. A year later, Derek began a new journey and started his career in the recovery industry. Throughout his career, Derek has worked his way through numerous roles at top-rated treatment centers. While working at those treatment centers, Derek began to see a pattern that those struggling individuals would’ve benefited immensely from receiving earlier in life.

Derek decided that he wanted to be a part of the solution, and find a way to address those issues at an earlier age. He concluded that there needed to be interventions before adulthood, and he didn’t want to see anyone going through the same cycle that he did. That was when he and Tyler Michaelis decided to start OC Revive, to make sure teens get the help they need to find a purpose that leads them to a life of happiness and success.

Derek attended college at Orange Coast College and Santa Barbara City College.
