Long Beach is absolutely no stranger to addiction, being the second-largest city in the entire Los Angeles County. It sits right on the border of L.A. itself as well as Orange County. Inpatient rehab programs abound here, as well as tales of fantastic recoveries from people who have gone on to become highly successful (especially in the social work and humanitarian fields!)

But that doesn’t mean the problem doesn’t still exist. With nearly a fifth of all adults in the city reporting binge drinking in 2015, there’s a higher prevalence of drinking than the American average. Rates of opioid prescriptions are also much higher.

Though there are plenty of treatment centers in Long Beach, many of them arose from necessity rather than passion. There are a lot of people on the streets and populating seedy neighborhoods who need treatment, and so facilities popped up to meet their needs.

People interested in specialty facilities or exemplary care and compassion from the professionals who will be treating them often look to other cities in Los Angeles County for their treatment.

This is especially true for anybody who has recently completed an inpatient program in Long Beach. You may want to continue to pursue recovery but be uncomfortable with the idea of jumping down to a partial hospitalization program while still in the same city with the same connections.

OC Revive is located less than an hour’s drive outside of Long Beach, and lots of people travel the distance every year just to come to our award-winning facility.

So It Is Easy to Find Rehab In or Near Long Beach, California?

Easy is an understatement. Long Beach is one of the world’s foremost party cities. It’s frequented by celebrities, hardcore partiers, travellers looking for a glimpse into California-style partying… the list goes on. Unfortunately, so does the list of people who take it a bit too far and find themselves completely stuck in Long Beach thanks to a nasty addiction.

There are so many rehab and addiction treatment groups and facilities in Long Beach that you’ll probably be within a couple blocks of one at any given moment. So you certainly won’t have a hard time finding a basic facility to run you through the industry standard treatments.

Whether or not it’s easy to find a personal rehab program that caters to your individualism, however, is a bit of a different story.

At OC Revive, our staff have more time to sit and work with you directly. We’re not here to simply feed you through the wringer and hope that you come out the other end looking like a nice, crisp, fully functional human being (although that is the ultimate goal!) We prefer to develop plans and match you with therapists and counselors who seem well-suited to your particular situation, which could mean anything from your present financial status to your mental health.

To figure this out you’ll be put through an initial assessment program. This will help to match you with capable therapists and program managers who run situations that will be particularly beneficial to your recovery.

Long Beach Alcoholism Treatment

In 2019, alcohol use disorder was most prevalent in adults aged 18-25 (10.5%); a total of 6.1% of people 12 and older had an alcohol use disorder.

Los Angeles County is blessed to have a hard-working and highly advanced Alcohol Drug Advisory Board (ADAB). This courageous group has shown leadership in regards to developing, advocating, and creating new types of treatment, preventative measures, and other protective practices to safeguard people against the demons of addiction—even the so-called “legal” ones, like alcohol.

Their relentless dedication to mental health and recovery are one of the main reasons that South California is renowned for its treatment facilities.  helping to ensure that Long Beach remains one of the most reliable and sought after counties for recovery treatment.

In addition to providing treatment, ADAB encourages people to make healthy choices with the Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention Services Strategic Plan. Together with Public Health Services’ Alcohol and Drug Education and Prevention Team (ADEPT), and Mental Health and Recovery Services’ AOD Prevention Services, entire governing bodies are dedicated to reducing addiction.

Alcohol is widely available and legal, so most believe it’s relatively benign. It’s not. People who drink daily and have massive, dynamic social lives may not realize that they’re putting themselves at risk of becoming so physically dependent on alcohol that their nervous system could suffer from, basically, an electrical surge (i.e. a seizure) and kill them.

Long Beach rehab programs, as well as rehabs throughout all of Los Angeles County, are more than familiar working with recovering alcoholics. Alcoholism and its ensuing recovery come part and parcel with living in such an exciting part of the world.

Enjoy yourself but be responsible. Once you’re ready to free yourself from alcohol addiction. An alcohol detox program will help to ensure that you can process the residual alcohol and the relevant withdrawal symptoms without sending your body into shock. Attempting to detox from alcohol at home can lead to seizures and even death.

Is Drug Addiction Treatment in Long Beach Available?

Just like the city of Long Beach is no stranger to alcoholism, neither are they strangers to drug addiction. There is no excuse to be. Addiction rates are significantly higher in Los Angeles County than they are across the rest of the continental United States. To top that off, compared to L.A., Long Beach has worse statistics in regards to addiction in many regards!

  • 306.4 years’ worth of life are lost for every 100,000 residents thanks to drug overdoses. This is higher than the average throughout the county.
  • Whereas only 16.3% of U.S. residents reported binge drinking in 2015, the average in Long Beach was up to 17.5% (according to the census. This is likely a lower percentage than the true statistic, due to the number of people unable to fulfill the census whilst binge drinking.)
  • The rate of opioid prescriptions in several different zip code regions of Long Beach is significantly higher than the national average, leading to a significant increase in the risk of opioid addiction.

Because of these and other factors, there are so many treatment centers in Long Beach proper that many choose to travel to outside communities to receive treatment. Doing this allows people to take advantage of specialized treatment protocols run by staff members who have the time and space to actually work with them personally.

Since Long Beach sees such a massive volume of people pass through the recovery system, there is a natural drive towards making the facilities more efficient and effective, so as to reduce patient transit time. This helps reduce wait times and encourages more people to attend the facility.

While it’s important that a facility is able to offer you all of the knowledge that you need to return to sober life, doing so “efficiently” may not be the best choice of word. Of course, the overall process must be efficient, but efficiency solely for the purpose of pushing as many people through the program as possible isn’t helpful. Methodical may be a better term.

When a facility works methodically they take the time and care necessary, by using tried and true methods, to tailor to every aspect of your treatment. It becomes an individualized experience, rather than a generalized one, and you remain the focus of your treatment—as should always be the case. At OC Revive, you’re the reason you’re here, not the next potential client who might drop a payment once your program is finished.

Our comprehensive treatment programs cover addiction to drugs like:

  • Opioids (heroin, fentanyl, etc).
  • Methamphetamine
  • Crack and cocaine
  • Prescription drugs (benzodiazepines, prescription opioids, ADHD medications)
  • Marijuana
  • MDMA and ecstasy
  • Barbiturates
  • Psychedelics
  • Many others – just ask

If you’re addicted to a substance not mentioned on this list, don’t hesitate to reach out. We are most likely capable of helping you work through any sort of addiction, we just need to know what it is we’re working with.

Program Variety

There’s a huge variety of different programs available at our clinic. Though why avoid full-on inpatient programs we do offer an assortment of outpatient, intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization programs.

Respectively, these programs begin at the lowest level of intensity (basic outpatient) and reach a much higher level of intensity at the level of parietal hospitalizations. A partial hospitalization program is generally prescribed for somebody who is stepping down after completing an inpatient rehab, rather than someone stepping up after failing an easier program.

Outpatient

Outpatient rehab is a good place to start if you’re struggling with a mild to moderate addiction. If you’ve never had a problem with addiction before, or if you’ve never attended a rehab treatment, outpatient may be a good place to start.

Intensive Outpatient (IOP)

IOP programs are more demanding than regular outpatient programs, often requiring up to 30 hours per week of commitment to counseling and coaching. Schedules are pretty flexible, since we want to make sure that you’re still able to maintain your regular schedule.

Virtual IOP

The COVID pandemic brought awareness of the need for virtual medical and mental health treatment programs (referred to collectively as telehealth, telemedicine, virtual therapy, etc.) These programs bring access to medical health treatment options that they might otherwise be unable to access.

There are various benefits and drawbacks to virtual IOPs. The first and most obvious drawback is that the whole program will thus require self-motivation and determination since it will be taking place at your home. If your home is your main place of drug abuse, then this program may not be the best option for you.

You must also have a supportive home environment for the proper facilitation of IOP. If all that’s a go, and your substance abuse problem is rather mild, then a virtual IOP may be all that you need to overcome your addiction.

Evening-IOP

Evening-IOP is a great option for people who have regular day-to-day work schedules and don’t want to sacrifice their job for their recovery.

Partial Hospitalization Programs

PHP programs are designed to function as a sort of halfway point between inpatient rehab and outpatient rehab. Most patients that we have in PHP just completed an inpatient program and aren’t feeling comfortable enough to return to society.

Typically courses run throughout most of the day. Patients are still allowed to return home in the evenings and on weekends, but the more stringent demands and scheduling makes this option more effective for people with serious addictions. It’s about as close to an inpatient program as you can get without an actual inpatient program.

Medication-Assisted Treatment

Medication-assisted treatment involves the use of prescribed medications; usually long-acting drugs with similar pharmacology as those that you’re addicted to.This allows you to have access to a safe supply that is less easy to abuse. Thus you can attend therapy and group meetings without losing focus due to cravings or discomfort.

Drug Court Programs

Drug court programs can vary in what they actually provide since the circumstances leading each individual into such a program are always unique. Generally, people end up in a drug court program after being accused of a charge but prior to actually being convicted.

If the problem is determined to have been drug-related then the offender might be referred to drug court and given a chance to complete a recovery program at a facility like OC Revive. Successful completion of the program could lead to the dismissal of charges.

Drug court programs have numerous requirements that other programs don’t, such as random and regular drug tests, regular appearances in court, rewards for remaining consistent with your goals (or sanctions in case of failure), assistance finding employment and establishing a healthy social circle, and so on.

Treatment for Professionals

If you work in an environment that would be less accepting of your decision to go to rehab, you may desire to do so in privacy. Fortunately, we are willing to work with professionals or students who are concerned about their ability to openly disclose the state of their recovery to their superiors.

Most workplaces have some sort of guidelines in place that allow people who develop addictions to maintain their position as long as they indicate their commitment to getting sober. If a professional needs an inpatient rehab program, problems present themselves immediately: an important cog in a large corporate machine cannot simply walk away from duty for 30+ days.

Fortunately, options like virtual therapy and keeping patients in remote areas removed from temptation, but not too far removed from work, to proceed with both treatment and their job.

Outpatient rehab is another great choice because the hours can be tailor to your schedule. However, since professionals—especially those working in the medical industry—can often have access to very powerful drugs, outpatient rehab may not be enough. In this case it may be necessary to see what sort of assurance your employers have in place for people who are afflicted by addiction.

Long Beach California Rehab - What Will My Experience Be Like?

The experience of rehab is different for everyone, but it generally consists of a combination of therapy, group meetings/12-step programs, and leisure time. Although these foundations are shared among all programs, you will receive a treatment itinerary designed based upon the information that we receive during your intake.

These are some examples of different tools and therapeutic practices that we can provide. Your ultimate rehab program will be designed to accommodate whichever ones will be best suited for you.

Therapy

Therapy is a broad term for any sort of practice that leads to the therapeutic improvement of your psyche. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of different types of therapy. OC Revive specifically employs therapists trained in over a dozen different modalities. These include:

  • Motivational Interviewing, a practice in which therapists use open-ended questions, offering support and empathy, and encouraging patients to reflect upon the information uncovered in session summaries.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a versatile form of therapy that helps patients understand the link between their behavior and their actions. They will be able to replace unhealthy behaviors with healthier and more sustainable ones. CBT is popular because it is useful for so many different purposes, including just about every type of drug addiction.
  • Adventure Therapy is a unique approach to therapy that involves getting people outside, active, and engaged in rich experiences that produce a rush of adrenaline. These experiences (like skydiving, for example) produce a powerful rush of sensation due to the perceived threat of dangers while the user remains safe thanks to the professionals handling the situation. Powerful emotional reactions like this are a great way to kickstart your brain’s reproduction of neurotransmitters !
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a form of therapy that is not dissimilar to CBT although it is more appropriate for people who struggle with extreme emotional intensity. It is particularly helpful for patients with co-occurring emotional disorders like depression or anxiety.
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) encourages patients to recognize and accept the full range of thoughts and emotions that they experience. Rather than denying or trying to change them, they accept them as part of who they are which creates much less internal conflict. Coupled with mindfulness-based therapy, this approach can help people learn to accept themselves rather than trying to become someone else through the use of drugs and alcohol.

Throughout this process you will discover a lot about yourself. Most importantly, you’ll learn all about the different ways that your addiction is connected to your thoughts, beliefs, actions, and feelings.

Group Meetings

Group meetings are regular occurrences at rehab centers. Most group meetings follow a similar format as the original Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous meetings, although this is not always the case.

Some groups are facilitated by a group leader; others are more organic and act simply as a container for recovering individuals to engage with one another and help to support each other. In either case you’re likely to learn a lot of different things about addiction discussing it firsthand with people who have been through it than you are from studying a textbook.

Holistic Treatments

Holistic treatments acknowledge that the mind, body and spirit are all equally important components that make up your identity. Treating one aspect of your ailment without acknowledging the rest is ineffective because we work as integrated systems. Holistic practices are developed under this premise and inherently acknowledge the interrelated relationship between different parts of the human being.

There are all sorts of holistic treatments and lifestyle changes that will be encouraged during your time here. These practices can, and should, be adopted or continued following your treatment program to help replace prior unhealthy habits. Like drugs, holistic practice all produce a positive change in mindset and wellbeing. Unlike drugs, they’re much more sustainable and if you’re particularly fond of one holistic practice you can make a goal of becoming a practitioner to sustain yourself financially

Some examples of holistic treatments employed during addiction rehab include:

  • Yoga
  • Massage
  • Meditation
  • Acupuncture
  • Nutritional therapy
  • Biofeedback
  • Energy work

Stephen Carmel

Co-Founder & CFO

I began my journey to recovery back in 2011 when i moved to California from New York.Along with my recovery and beginning a new way of life, I began to develop a heart for others struggling with sobriety. My journey to California was filled with many trials and lessons learned, but most of all, personal growth. I truly believe I would not have found success if I didn’t come to California.

I first opened an adult treatment center, California Prime Recovery(CPR) as a way to work with those struggling on a daily basis. Over the last 3 years, CPR has evolved into someting much more impactful and beautiful than i could’ve ever imagined. I have come to realize that my own happiness and growth depends on being involved in the lives of others in recovery. Helping people through recovery is a cornerstone of many 12 step programs, and it has become the most important aspect of personal life. Giving back to those still suffering is the only way not to lose what you have gained.

Throughout this journey, and by mentoring many adolescents, I realized i wanted to offer more to teens who were struggling just as i was. This is when i decided to start OC Revive. I had built many wonderful relationships throughout my professional journey and found two others who shared the same vision, and passion that i had for the youth. It didn’t take long for myself, Tyler Michaelis, and Derek Walsh to turn our dream into a reality. We are committed to providing the best possible treatment for adolescents and truly believe “their future is our collective responsibility”.

Derek Walsh

Co-Founder & COO

As Co-Founder & COO of OC Revive, Derek has a wealth of personal and professional experience dealing with the issues faced by today’s troubled teen. Throughout High School and College, Derek struggled with peer pressure, learning challenges, and substance abuse. Working with the support of family and friends, Derek set out to conquer those obstacles and find a richer, more fulfilling life.

On 15 October 2012, Derek overcame his own substance abuse problem and dedicated himself to help others work through their own addiction. A year later, Derek began a new journey and started his career in the recovery industry. Throughout his career, Derek has worked his way through numerous roles at top-rated treatment centers. While working at those treatment centers, Derek began to see a pattern that those struggling individuals would’ve benefited immensely from receiving earlier in life.

Derek decided that he wanted to be a part of the solution, and find a way to address those issues at an earlier age. He concluded that there needed to be interventions before adulthood, and he didn’t want to see anyone going through the same cycle that he did. That was when he and Tyler Michaelis decided to start OC Revive, to make sure teens get the help they need to find a purpose that leads them to a life of happiness and success.

Derek attended college at Orange Coast College and Santa Barbara City College.
